Eurasian collared dove - lone bird on my feeder pole early this AM. I saw these in Texas and am pretty confident of the ID - the pointed black stripe. I've been hearing the voice, too loud for and not like the mourning dove. These are also on Vashon as of this year, so maybe there are some explorers over here. Or, of course, I have not been very observant...in which case, ignore this.

If you were wondering why you have't seen many Caspian Terns this year fishing off Pt. Wilson, it's probably because the Dungeness Spit colony has mainly moved to the Port of Bellingham. Yesterday we saw over 2,000 adults, 250 or so juveniles and active nests in a large open area between buildings at the Port. The activity was amazing but too far away to photograph well. The terns were fishing up and down the coast to feed them all. I've requested that some be returned but I doubt anyone will listen!?!

For the last 3 days, Bob Whitney has seen and photographed a female Bullock's Oriole in the trees across from the parking lot. See his image at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rlw/. I was there for the first sighting but it was at the same time a female Western Tanager showed up and the three of us shooting missed the difference until Bob downloaded his images on his computer. 1 birder(s)
Location: Fort Worden pier Region & State: west WA (USA)
An amazing sight. Standing on the pier, i saw a speck on the horizon in Admiralty Inlet. Looking through my 400 mm lens, i saw it was a deer, and that it was swimming this way through the shipping channel. Based on its path, it presumably began its crossing from Whidbey Island. The tide was incoming at the time (10:30 am). I was amazed at the doe's stamina. Deer are way more powerful swimmers that i imagined. It arrived on shore, shook the water off like you see dogs do, and joined a second doe that, based on its soaked fur, must have crossed earlier.

Location: Wildlife Landscape Tour in Port Townsend Region & State: west WA (USA)
Our group of 7 visited 4 residences to see wildlife habitat saved and created. Saved habitats seen were mature conifers and deciduous trees such as bitter cherry. A hedge of nootka rose and snowberry had survived to provide dense cover and nesting for birds including the white crowned sparrow. Plantings of native shrubs have grown from seedlings to 10 feet high in 8 years and now provide wildlife with an array of flowers, fruits, and seeds. Now they are large enough most weed are of minor consequence to their health. Jill showed us an abandoned dark eyed junco nest with two speckled eggs. The nest had been woven into the base stems of a clump of tall field grass. We saw a great variety of native and introduced plants from annuals, perennials, ground covers, shrubs, and trees. All were planted primarily for their wildlife values. For a list of wildlife friendly plants send a request to sikes@olympus.net. Thanks to Jill Silver, fellow trip leader and the wildlife landscape owners the Nightengales and the Bugel-Shunras.

An afternoon low tide allowed for easy access from point to point. The birds were actively feeding, many of them taking on fuel for the imminent breeding season and migration. The glaucous winged gulls may be Protection Island nesters but the black turnstones, the mew gulls, the common loons, the black bellied plovers, the surf scoters, buffleheads, red breasted mergansers, and about 100 brant we saw, will be headed for their arctic or taiga forest breeding areas. Most were in their breeding plumage including some black bellied plover, horned grebe, and the common loon. Together on the fence near the light house were a male mountain blue bird and a very red house finch. The mountain blue bird may be the same bird D. Gluckman found this morning at Point Wilson.

I was invited along to help find the birds and to relate their natural history. We had a perfect day with full press sun and no wind. The views of the Puget Sound, the snow covered Cascades and Olympics was magnificent. The geese were flying, landing and feeding next to Wylie Road just south of Fir Island Road and just west of the South Fork of the Skagit. This road dead ends at a Wa. Dept of Fish & Wildlife parking area with clean non flush toilets. A WA. DFW access permit is required to use this access. Our birding walk started at the Larry Scott trail near the restroom. A group of 4, we set out along the waterfront toward Point Hudson. The wind was whipping up the waves but the air temperature was moderate. Birds have to feed no matter and we saw a variety along our walk, While we were sheltering under the overhang of a shoreline condominium a group of harlequin ducks came bobbing on waves quite close. We were allowed a good look at their marvelous plumage. The black turnstones were absent at Point Hudson. We guessed they were over at Fort Flagler in the lee of the wind. Glauscous winged and mew gulls were the only birds on the gravel covered point. A Steller's sealion swam close by as it went around the point. Earlier having left a car, we drove back to our starting place. Just as we headed for home a few large rain drops fell. Perhaps we had done well to start at 8 AM. Bird s species noted were: Double crested & Pelagic comorant, Glaucous winged gull & hybrids, Mew gull, Sanderling, Black bellied plover, Pigeon guillemot, Pacific brant, Mallard, Harlequin, Common golden eye, Bufflehead, Surf scoter, Red breasted merganser, Hooded merganser,American crows, Song sparrow, House sparrow, and European Starling.

Ten birders met at the John Wayne Marina. We enjoyed seeing gulls, dunlin and waterfowl including three gull species in one scopes view. These were the Bonapart'es, mew, and glaucous wing gull. A male harrier flew toward us as it tracked the rock jetty. Moving to Port Williams we hiked to the lagoon near the Battell Laboratory. Here we watched green wing teal and norther pintail. Unfortunately we found a dead common loon, 4 cackling geese, and one Canada goose along the waters edge of the Bay. We did get to see a pair of long tailed female ducks feeding relatively close to us. By the time we reached the Three Crab area the wind was howling and made it difficult to view the hundreds of American widgeon and gulls. We had hoped to find a Eurasian widgeon and a Thayer's gull. Two of us decided to go to the Dungeness County Park and search for a short eared owl. On our way we stopped at the Oyster House Road public access where we saw hundreds of widgeon rafting in the waves. At the county park we hiked along the west boundary looking for the owl in the open fields. Except for soaring gulls and two ravens the birds were keeping in shelter and out of sight.

After John Wayne Marina we split into two groups - one going a lot faster than the other, enabling our faster one to get to Dungeness Bay area before the big winds blew. We saw lots of Dunlin and Sanderlings along with Black-bellied Plovers on the flats. There was a large flock of House Finches (200+) on one power pole at Three Crabs and 30+ Brewer's Blackbirds on the other. The ponds on the east held Gadwall, GW Teal and lots of Mallards. A few Eagles were seen fly and roosting around the bay. We also saw 3 Eurasian Collered Doves on the wires between 3 Crabs and Oysterhouse County Park. Carrie Blake Park in Sequim produced the only Eurasian Widgeon of the day. It was a good trip for all.

While getting a lesson for the upcoming Audubon Sea Bird Survey starting October 3rd at Pt. Wilson, we saw the first real indication of fall birds moving in. 10-15 Marbled Murlets were fairly close to shore with Common Murres, Pigeon Guillemots, Rhinoceros Auklets and a Brant's Cormorant actively fishing for scalpin. If you wish to participate or just watch this process within an hour or so of high tide on the first Saturdays of the next 6 months, those who volunteer (contact me or the Marine Science Center volunteer coordinator) and show up, will note the birds on the water and locations according to a set methodology over a 15 minute or half hour time period that will go into the larger Puget Sound data base Seattle Audubon has been working on for the last few years. Point Wilson is the newest site. If there's enough interest new sites around PT may be established.

Below is a report on fall Yellowstone Birds I posted on Tweeters for any that might care. We return on Sunday. It was tough birding. The first thing we tried to do was to try to find any recent information on bird sightings and drew a complete blank. No official person knew anything or anyone who might. There is a bird list available (and a decent book) but these weren’t helpful except to verify sightings that were a little iffy. Maybe our experiences below help to explain this lack of recent stuff. We did see a number of birds that I will try to list with locations. Nothing unusual or lifer’s for us. Unfortunately there was simply no consistency in our sitings except for a few birds at one location. One day there were different birds all over the place at one spot within a few minutes and then none the next 6 times we went there. Others were pretty much the same except we didn’t try them as consistently. This is a big park with lots of driving so you have to pick out where you want to be at sunup or down and go there. If nothing shows up you move to someplace else and hope luck is with you. Or, you choose an area that feels right and wait all day. We did the former (averaging 70-80 miles a day in the park loking for bears and wolves as well), so I can’t advise whether sitting around is any better. (Of course you can just go looking for the big animals and bird while you wait – a sound strategy for most of us). In general, it’s my unscientific opinion that fall is a mediocre time to bird Yellowstone. There are no nests or mating areas to anchor populations, nor are there consistent food sources specific locations for many of them to rely on. The birds seem to be moving around a lot. Many of the males have moved on and the juveniles and a few females are mostly what you see. There were reasonable amounts of ducks on the ponds and lakes but only juveniles and a few female adults. We saw Ruddies, Widgeon, Mallards, Pintail, Scaup, Common Goldeneye, Common Merganser and Harlequins in various locations. Lots of Canada Geese as well. Yellow-rumped Warblers (mostly juveniles) were the most common warbler with a few Wilson’s. Lots of Clark’s Nutcrackers in almost all locations. A few Gray Jays. Here are some of the birds and locations – Who knows what will be there when you are?? Gardiner –RV park – Flocks of Cedar Waxwings for two days and then they left. Mammoth Hot Springs - The one really birdy location (for 20 minutes) was next to the stream on the right side of the lower terrace of Mammoth Hot Springs where there was nothing the next 6 times we showed early, noon and late: 10-20 Mt. Bluebirds, 2 Clark’s Nutcrackers, 5-6 Robins, a Varied Thrush, a Hairy Woodpecker, 5-6 Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Townsend’s Solitaire, a Chipping Sparrow, pair of Williamson’s Sapsuckers, lots of Brewer’s Blackbirds. Floating Islands Lake – 3 Sora Rails (2 juveniles and a female) stayed in this pond and were visible all 4 times we stopped. The only truly consistent place in the park for us. Tower Falls area - Bald Eagles were plentiful (three pair circling South of Tower Falls and others scattered). Red-tailed Hawks were seen from the Lamar Valley to near the top of Mt. Washburn – Adults and juveniles. Alum Creek confluence with the Yellowstone River – Adult and juvenile Swainson’s Hawks soaring overhead. Common Goldeneye and Canada Geese in the river. LeHardy Rapids on the Yellowstone - 8-10 Harlequin Juveniles diving and resting on the rocks. Pebble Creek Campground – 2 Mountain Chickadees It was actually a pretty feeble trip as birding trips go. On the other hand, the scenery is always spectacular, the elk and bison are all over the place and you have a 50-50 shot at seeing bears and wolves. Besides, as spotty as the birds where this week, next week could be totally different. Good luck and good birding all!
